Creating Medication Types

How to create medication types in the Dashboard.

A medication type is a customizable questionnaire or form template that determines which questions a DSP must answer each time they administer, or attempt to administer, medication to a client.

Medication types help ensure documentation aligns with agency requirements, compliance standards, and internal workflows.

You can create different medication types for different medications to capture the appropriate information. For example, a standard oral tablet may only require a signature and administration time, while an insulin injection may also require blood glucose readings and the number of units administered.

For more information on adding medications to a client's plan and tracking medication events, see Managing Medications in the Client Profile.

Note: When adding a medication to a client's profile, you can select a medication type. If no medication type is selected, caregivers will only be required to enter the administration time and general details.

Step 1: Add and Name the Medication Type

  1. Click the dropdown arrow in the top left corner

  2. Click Feature Settings

  3. Select the Medications card

  4. Click + Add new type

  5. Enter the Medication Type name

Note: The Medication Type will be visible to caregivers in the app. Medications are grouped by type to make them easier to identify.

Step 2: Customize the Fields

After naming the medication type, customize the fields using one of the following options:

Option 1: Copy fields from an existing medication type

  1. Click the Copy fields from medication type dropdown

  2. Select the medication type you want to copy the fields from

  3. Make any necessary edits or add additional fields

Option 2: Create the fields from scratch

  1. Click + Add Field

  2. Enter the Field Name

  3. Click the Field Type dropdown and select the desired field type. Available options include:

    • Date and Time

    • Long Text

    • Multiple Choice

    • Number

    • Photos/Video

    • Short Text

    • Signature (Digital or Drawn)

    • Single Choice

    • Toggle

  4. (Optional) Mark the field as Required

  5. Repeat these steps until the form is built

Step 3: Enable Post-Administration Notification (Optional)

If you want to send a follow-up push notification to the DSP after the medication is administered, turn on Enable Post-Administration Notification. See the Setting Up Post-Administration Notifications section for more details.

Step 4: Save the Medication Type

Once the type is built as desired, click Save Changes.

The medication type will then be available to select when adding medications to clients. For instructions on how to add and manage medications on the client profile, see Managing Medications in the Clients Profile.
