Shift Descriptions

Giv introduces a new feature that gives agency admin the ability to add formatted notes and instructions directly to a shift.

🧩 Overview

Shift Descriptions is a new feature that gives agency admins the ability to add formatted notes and instructions directly to a shift. Admins can now communicate shift expectations β€” such as tasks the client needs to complete or a schedule of events β€” in a structured way that is visible to caregivers on the mobile app.

Previously, there was no way to attach contextual notes or instructions to an individual shift. This feature fills that gap by introducing an optional description field in both the shift creation and edit flows, with rich text formatting that renders consistently across the dashboard and the caregiver app.

πŸ‘₯ Impacted Users

  • Agency Admins: Can now add, edit, and remove formatted descriptions on any shift, including individual occurrences within a recurring series.

  • Caregivers / DSPs: Can view shift descriptions on the shift details page in the mobile app, with an expandable "Show More" option for longer instructions.

  • Customer Success Team: Should be familiar with where the description field appears and how formatting behaves to support admin and caregiver questions.

✨ New Features and Feature Enhancements

Web Dashboard β€” Shift Description Field (Admin)

An optional description field has been added to the shift creation and edit flows on the web dashboard.

  • Optional field: Shifts can be saved with or without a description. No existing shifts are affected.

  • Rich text formatting: The description field supports bold, italics, lists, and other formatting options via a text editor. If plain text is entered, the exact formatting as typed is preserved and displayed.

  • Consistent rendering: Formatting applied on the dashboard renders identically in the caregiver mobile app.

  • Add, edit, or remove: Admins can update or clear a shift description at any time through the shift edit flow.

Web Dashboard β€” Recurring Shift Support

For recurring shifts, admins can now edit the description on a single occurrence without affecting any other shifts in the series.

  • Individual occurrence editing: Clicking into a single occurrence of a recurring shift and updating its description will only change that specific shift.

  • Series unaffected: All other occurrences in the recurring series remain unchanged.

Caregiver Mobile App β€” Shift Description Card

A new "Description" card now appears on the shift details page in the caregiver app when a description has been added by an admin.

  • Truncated preview: The description displays the first 3–4 lines by default to keep the shift details page clean and scannable.

  • "Show More" toggle: A "Show More" button allows caregivers to expand the full description inline. Tapping again collapses it.

  • Formatting preserved: Rich text formatting (bold, italics, lists, etc.) applied by the admin renders correctly in the app.

  • No description, no card: If no description has been added to a shift, the Description card does not appear on the shift details page.

✨ Feature Set and Affected Feature Areas

Shift Descriptions is part of the Shift Management feature area. The following related areas are touched by this release:

  • Shift Creation (Web Dashboard): New optional description field added to the creation modal.

  • Shift Editing (Web Dashboard): Description field available in the edit flow; supports individual edits on recurring shift occurrences.

  • Recurring Shifts (Web Dashboard): Single-occurrence description editing is isolated and does not propagate to other shifts in the series.

  • Shift Details Page (Caregiver Mobile App): New Description card with truncated view and expandable "Show More" toggle.

Out of scope for this release:

  • Caregivers creating or editing shift descriptions (view only).

  • Description fields on any non-shift record types.

πŸ› Issues and Bug Fixes

No standalone bug fixes are included in this release. This feature resolves the following known gap:

  • Previously, admins had no structured way to attach notes or instructions to a shift, leading to reliance on out-of-band communication channels. The Shift Descriptions feature directly addresses this by providing a native, formatted description field on the shift record.
