Setting Up Shift Types (Open, Staff-Only, Impromptu)

How to setup and enable different Shift Types in the Dashboard.

Giv supports several shift types beyond standard scheduled shifts. Open shifts let caregivers claim unassigned shifts. Staff-only shifts let caregivers clock in without a client. Impromptu shifts let caregivers start unscheduled shifts from the app.

Each shift type is enabled in Feature Settings and then configured for individual caregivers in their staff profile. This lets agencies control which caregivers can use each shift type.

Open Shifts

Open Shifts let agencies create a shift without assigning a caregiver. Eligible caregivers can then claim open shifts from the mobile app.

Common uses include filling staffing gaps, covering last-minute cancellations, and call-outs.

Turning on the Setting

Enable in Agency Settings

  1. Log in to the Dashboard

  2. Click the Agency Settings icon in the upper-right corner

  3. Select the Shift Settings card

  4. Under Shift Types, turn on Enable Open Shifts

  1. Click Staff in the left menu

Creating an Open Shift

Create the shift from the Calendar by selecting + Create shift > Single Shift. Enter the shift details, including the date and time, description, address, and clients. Do not assign a caregiver. After creating the shift, select the number of staff needed and click Create open shift.

See Creating an Open Shift for more information.

Viewing Open Shifts in the Calendar

Open shifts appear in gray on the Calendar. You can also filter open shifts by claim status:

  • Not Claimed: No staff have claimed the shift

  • Partially Claimed: Some, but not all, required staff have claimed the shift

  • Fully Claimed: The requested number of staff has been reached

Claiming an Open Shift

Once created, an open shift is available for eligible caregivers to claim in the mobile app. Caregivers can tap View Open Shifts on the Home screen, select the shift they want to claim, and save their selection. After claiming a shift, it appears under Upcoming Shifts.

See Claiming Open Shifts for more information.
